Awards Winners Webinar - Valve Trak

Registration is closed for this event
The Pipeline Industries Guild would like to welcome UIS Innovation Technology Services as they speak about their winning entry, Valve Trak. As with the subsea award, this award, introduced in 1996, is made annually for the most significant contribution made to land-based pipeline technology or its ancillary apparatus. The objective of the award is similarly to promote the development of new ideas in the general field of land-based pipeline technology.

Valve Trak is a low-powered tracking device attached to the Pipeline Isolation Valve. PIVs are usually found underground. They enable engineers to turn off the supply to a multi-occupancy building quickly. Experience shows that, even if installed and digitised in accordance with all regulations and requirements, locating them can often be challenging as over time, debris build up in the valve chamber can block the valve spindle, rendering it inoperable without excavating and clearing the area.

In the event of a fire, for example, it can be unsafe for a close visual inspection of the building line. This is a problem because that’s where marker plates are usually situated, which help on-site engineers find the PIV. Valve Trak stays dormant until activated by an engineer via a secure mobile application. Once activated, it emits a loud alarm, shows the precise location on the app, and gives the engineer important asset data.

Developed by Manchester-based Utility Innovation Services (UIS), the tracker is being implemented on a range of sites – including high-rise buildings, and on complex distributions systems and M1 valves.
